Basic Rules Of Making Quotations In An Argumentative Essay

When you are asked to write an argumentative essay, your main goal is to present your side of a controversial issue. Your task is to choose one side of an issue and then present a case to show that it is the correct side. One of the best ways to make sure that you write a successful argumentative essay is to make sure that you add some direct quotes from credible sources to support your claims. When you are using quotations in your essay, there are a few things that you have to think about.

  1. Use quotes that enhance the piece
  2. You can’t just pick any quote on the subject just to fulfill that requirement if you plan on writing a good essay. The quote has to say the same thing that you are saying. It should be like the writer is on your side and helping you make the argument. This is very important because a quote that is just thrown in there is going to take away from the argument.

  3. It has to be properly cited
  4. There are many types of formatting guides that are used. You need to figure out which one you have to use for this paper and make sure that you cite the sources in that format. You can check out the formatting guide to make sure that you cite it properly. If you are using a resource library, you may find that they will present the source in all of the different formats for you that you can just copy and paste into the source page. It will not show you the in text citation so you will have to make sure that you look into that.

  5. Use a citation for each point
  6. You shouldn’t overly use cited material. It shouldn’t be a pasted mess of other people’s work. However, you should site something for each supporting reason and even one in the introduction. You should make it a rule of thumb to use on in each paragraph except the rebuttal. I would not cite a source for the rebuttal paragraph unless it is to prove your point.

When you are using citations, remember that the purpose is to give more credit to what you say. You wouldn’t listen to just anyone about your financial advice, so you should get an expert to back up your statements which is what citing sources does for your paper.
